Complexities of Later-Life Eating Disorders

Osteoporosis, hormonal imbalances and heart problems are just a few of the various complexities and risks associated with later-life eating disorders, as mentioned in a recent goodtherapy.org blog.
Negative body image and an intense desire for thinness can worsen, re-emerge or first appear later in life as a result of hormonal changes, relationship or lifestyle changes, an obsession with youthfulness, an appearance-obsessed American culture and praises of weight loss and thinness by well meaning family, friends and healthcare providers.
Later-life eating disorders are challenging and difficult, especially with the stigma that they are “teen diseases,” however; as we know firsthand, several types of treatment can and do help patients recover from disordered eating.
Metro Behavioral Health Associates treats all eating disorders across the spectrum and at all ages using a collaborative team approach comprised of eating disorder specialists. We offer treatment groups, individual therapy, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), hypnosis for weight loss, nutritional support and medication management.
