NYC Takes A Step Towards Fighting Obesity

Congratulations to New York City! As reported on HungryForChange.com, the Big Apple has become the most recent city to take local health matters into their own hands – through the introduction of a new program that has the potential to lessen America’s obesity epidemic. The “Fruit and Vegetables Prescription Program” allows doctors to prescribe fresh fruit and vegetables to overweight or obese patients by giving them “Health Bucks” that are redeemable at local farmer’s markets.
This makes the city the largest U.S. city and New York the seventh state to officially acknowledge that fruits and vegetables have a role to play in preventing chronic degenerative disease – an idea that the FDA insists is not appropriate. However, New York clearly isn’t allowing the FDA’s outdated perspective stop it from instituting the healthy program.
