Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for Eating Disorders

Our targeted IOP Programs are for those people for whom psychotherapy and other adjunct services seem not to have the desired impact or outcome. This is a higher level of care with specific criteria based on such factors as height/weight ratio, frequency and pervasiveness of symptoms or behaviors in one’s life, weight trends and more.

POPULATIONS BEST SERVED BY OUR TARGETED IOP PROGRAMS
  • ADULT IOP (15-30’s and up) – for those with symptoms along the Anorexic and Bulimic spectrum
  • TWEEN IOP (ages 10-14) – for beginning, suspected or persistent symptoms along the entire disordered eating spectrum. This program includes a good deal of parental or caregiver involvement.
  • BARIATRIC IOP – for adults who have been told they are clinically obese, morbidly obese, considering weight loss surgery, post-surgery or no surgery at all who are just sick and tired of the same failed attempts to lose and/or maintain weight permanently. This is not just about nutrition – everyone knows some method of losing weight. Its about becoming comfortable in your own skin and doing the emotional work that is necessary for this to finally no longer be a risk to one’s physical, social, financial and psychological health.

WHAT THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE

  • Treatment Groups: These may include Art or Music Therapy, Psychotherapy, Chair Yoga, Behavior Modification/Alternate Coping Skills, Nutritional Education, Family Issues, Body Image and more.
  • One Daily Supervised Meal  with Meal Support Therapy following each meal: This is based on an individualized meal plan that you devise with our nutrition staff. It may be dinner or, if on Saturday, a brunch meal.
  • Family and/or Individual Psychotherapy: if you are not already in treatment with an outside provider, we will provide this or offer trusted referrals to others.
  • Medical Monitoring: individually determined on a case by case basis.
  • Collaboration with professionals already providing treatment.

CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS BEFORE ENTERING IOP

  • Prior to starting IOP, patients will undergo a comprehensive  biopsychosocial assessment at our site.
  • Medical clearance is required to participate in IOP. The physician at our location has extensive expertise in treating and diagnosing the medical implications of eating disorders or we can make referrals to other trusted physicians in the area if needed.
  • All patients are required to be in weekly psychotherapy while in IOP. If needed, we can provide this on-site (separate fee from the IOP) or we can refer patients to other trusted therapists with eating disorders treatment experience.
  • Only if deemed necessary, patients may be asked to be evaluated by a psychopharmacologist if not already on medication. We can  provide this on-site or we can refer patients to other trusted psychiatrists with eating disorders treatment experience.

DURATION OF TREATMENT

  • It is our experience that most patients obtain maximum benefit at this level of care for a minimum stay of 5-8 weeks. A step-down to one of our weekly outpatient groups may then recommended, as well as continued individual nutrition and/or psychotherapy here or elsewhere.

PAYMENT OF FEES

  • We do not participate with managed care contracts but will provide weekly receipts if in fact one’s policy allows for out-of-network behavioral care.
  • On a case by case basis, it may be possible to arrange an ad hoc or single-case agreement to be paid directly by a managed care company if the company agrees that the service is unique and/or cannot be obtained in the patient’s geographical area by an in-network provider.
